Weekly Roundup

Welcome back to weekend coffee chats, where we discuss different topics from life as a young professional in corporate all the way to businesses, social media, books, and coffee. We ask questions and dive to learn, so grab your favorite beverage and join us.

This week let’s take a look at the highlights of the last week and briefly talk about them:

  • The Market ups and downs
    • Unless you’ve been living under a rock or completely uninterested in the financial markets and don’t receive updates about them, you’d know that the past week let alone past month has been a crazy rollercoaster. Companies going up and down 10 and even 20 percents in billions of value within the same day.
    • if you’re not affected, be kind to those who are. Such times are stressful and full of emotions and being understanding towards those affected that you know is helpful.
    • if you’re affected however, then be careful whose advice you’re following and whether you’re getting your information from multiple sources with different viewpoints or not. As the latest case of a Finance Youtube creator acting opposite to what he’s been teaching his followers for a while about investing to make money out of the market lows, shows how unreliable these creators sadly can be.
  • Don’t be the jerk
    • I’ve been at a restaurant this weekend with family, and suddenly a pair of customers stood up leaving their table of ordered food without paying. When asked about it by the staff they stated yelling how the service was horrible and how they refuse to pay and will leave regardless. What pisses me off is, do these people truly think the world revolves around them that it’s ok to mess someone’s job (as the manager will surely give the employees a hard questioning or time for this ) and embarrass them in front of others? It is easy to yell and make a scene and storm off, as an adult you learn that tantrums in complicated life situations is the easy way out not the brave or strong one.
    • The adult choice is to have a tough conversation and let these employees know (or whoever it is in that situation) that you’re unhappy with the service and work an arrangement that suits both of you. It’s also important to remember that everyone is human and stressed, instead of yelling at these employees whom are late due to the many customers eating at the same time (lunch rush hour), appreciate and thank them for serving you in times of corona where not only is their health at risk but their pay is likely lower than usual. I won’t logic this into a pretty paragraph, this is horrible to even witness let alone being the person going through that. In the same time I thank the beautiful humans acknowledging the ridiculousness of what happened, and telling the employees they did nothing wrong and offering emotional support and jokes to cheer up the staff. Try not to be the jerk, the world already has a lot of them.
  • Business
    • seems like we’re moving from brick and mortar to online based small businesses that get exposure and orders from the top social media platforms in that moment of time. Currently if you’re looking to attract customers for your products tiktok is currently the place to be, for services (gyms, restaurants, exc.) instagram seems to remain the spot as most people I know would look for a business on Instagram for information.
  • Social Media
    • Hamilton is back on social media, and it’s fantastic. It’s becoming more obvious how social media can be a toxic place, but on such days I think we need to take a minute and admire what a wonderful place it can be. Where one person can channel his positivity and massage, to millions in different places all around the world who look forward to it. And if your loyalties to a certain player prevents you from seeing this, or you undermine the happiness of the fans, I invite you to ask yourself would you react the same if it was someone you care about whether famous or not?
  • Books, Podcasts, or Articles I’ve been learning from or just enjoying
    • I’ve been reading Michelle Obama’s book “Becoming” for the past month and not only was it so interesting to read, it’s packed with life lessons and guidance, especially for young people. Keep an eye for a new post that will drop about it.
  • Something I’m pondering:
