In the spirit of Halloween, let’s jump into some spooky changes that are going on for online subscriptions. A few weird and some spooky. First, make sure you subscribe so you get the latest updates to your email directly, don’t worry as a fellow 9to5er I don’t have time to spam you 🙂 !
I’ve been recently interested in masterclass (the website with videos), I know I know I’ve missed the bandwagon when it was marketed everywhere and everyone was jumping on it. Long story short, it now has people I’m interested in learning from, but the main issue is that I’m surprised to find out they only have yearly billing! So basically if I subscribe today, I’ll have to pay a minimum of 189$ for the entire 12 months billed once. I mean if you need that much revenue for your business to carry on, why not raise equity or get VC Funding? Even if you’re targeting customers with higher pay, no one likes to pay a big amount upfront. What’s worse is that after I clicked to check the prices, and obviously left the website, I started getting masterclass ads on youtube and all other platforms I use. I mean these marketing dollars can be saved, I don’t need ads to convince me to sign up, just make it a monthly payment, and I along with lots of interested people I’d assume we’d all subscribe. It almost seems as if businesses enjoy complicating things for themselves.
On the flip side, another spooky thing is the bombardments of monthly subscriptions in every corner of the internet these days! Do you want to read this article? Subscribe. Want to continue learning how to program? Subscribe. Want to play this game fully? Subscribe. I mean, till when do companies expect they can keep bombarding consumers for monthly subscriptions? I assume because I’m a consumer, it won’t end up as they’re expecting “Oh I’m so tired of this I’ll just subscribe”. It would go something likes “oh I’m so tired of this I won’t open this newspaper account anymore as I know it has a paywall, or I won’t download games from this store as I know it will be just one level then pay or game over” This will only push consumers away from your platform, game, website, etc. and go to other options they see as straight forward or affordable.
Again, I don’t mind paying for a bundle and I assume a few people won’t either so it’s about time companies put their ego aside, and get going with value-adding bundles. Bonus, if small companies start doing this before the giants, they’ll get discovered by more people than sticking it out on their own.
How about you? what are your thoughts on yearly vs monthly subscriptions and bundles? Let me know in the comments. As always you can also add to the comments any topic you’re interested in me writing about.
