Cult culture, following a famous person blindly, & history repeating

Lately it seems that the cult-like following of celebrities or famous people is on the rise. Not only that but dedicated accounts that look for opposing views and content to attack and troll.

The issue is when these people are successful in one aspect, the narrative transforms to become that they can succeed in anything else they’re interested in. Before rushing to that conclusion we need to remind ourselves how even successful athletes ended up bankrupt due to this same fallacy coupled with poor financial knowledge and the assumption of “how hard can it be for me to be successful in this since I’m already super successful in my field?”

People following certain individuals and/or accounts and attacking anyone questioning what they do or why especially if the action itself is uncommon is a dangerous thing that came with heavy costs in the past.

Just like political figures were blindly followed in the past, and we read and wondered “what were these people thinking following them? Why no one questioned what they were doing ?” ; we find ourselves in that spot today just in other medias on top of politics.

Such figures taking advantage and encouraging this rather than supporting open discussion should take a step back and truly ask themselves do they want to be a cult leader?

It can be embellished and twisted multiple ways depending on who you ask but in the end, that’s what transpiring in front of us, cults, and multiple of them among different important mediums and sectors.

Cult culture is the new “it” and you’re either with it or against it, and prepare for the madness and backlash if you are against it.

We live in times where billionaires and millionaires try to do whatever they want, as long as they can afford it. Opening schools, buying public businesses, pumping and dumbing stocks, breaking industry rules, jeopardizing other athletes lives, and more with followers supporting and advocating for them and for what? Social acceptance ? Are they paid for it as a job or freelance gig or a troll position (other than the robot bots)? Or do they believe someone smart must know something they don’t and they need to quietly follow them without asking any questions?

But guess what, questions are exactly what we need. We need to question things, people, and even our own motives. To think critically and look for insights so we don’t all blindly keep walking till we fall off the edge. I leave you with a quote that T.S. Eliot says best in the end of his poems, and even though it was about a very specific post war time, I find it relevant so often.

“This is the way the world ends

Not with a bang but a whimper” – T.S. Eliot

Till next time !
