Welcome back to weekend coffee chats, this week we’re talking about us fans and whether figures we follow are giving back to us or not and no I’m not talking about the usual “Thank you guys, or this is all thanks to you” words and no action kind of thing.
I think we’ve all seen social media figures whom rise in the public eye due to loyal fanbases that support them with likes, shares, dedicated accounts, buying merch (merchandise) and products, and spreading the word. Yet what I don’t see enough of is these figures showing that thanks to their fans. I know free giveaways and random draws for tickets exist, but is it really enough? As a fan I don’t think so, especially that some accounts go as far as defending their favorite figures or artists, and debunking rumors and false narratives.
Now I know safety is a big worry for these people, sadly stalkers do exist, and they cause real fear and precautions. But are we truly able to secure large events with thousands of people, but unable to secure ones with a few hundreds?
What also got me thinking, is the many talented singers emerging on tiktok, some of them even write their own lyrics in addition to singing it (while many big artists work with song writers instead) So how can you differentiate yourself against future competition? That’s why I think involving the fandom could be such a win win situation for the fans and figures. Additionally, their already achieved position gives them enough monetary funds to do a lot. Now I don’t mean they should try to block these young talents, on the contrary, I think the young artists are here to stay and thrive especially with being so close to their own fanbases on tiktok, but for the old talent to survive new strategies are worth considering.
Ok enough theory, so basically like what?
- Free concert tickets, you enter a draw and winners get vetted. Again no I don’t mean 3 or 4 tickets out of the 10,000 being sold, which is currently being done. I mean 200 or 400 tickets, and take them out of your marketing budget instead of paying thousands for ads when you have fans whom want to come but maybe can’t afford or weren’t able to get tickets in time (yes some sell out so quickly a lot of fans are left in tears instead of happiness) Plus these fans have phones and they’d be posting nonstop before, during, and after the events since they genuinely care vs normal advertisement.
- Meet and greet, consistently and on a bigger scale (this will also help reduce the madness that happens when people see celebrities as they won’t remain this inaccessible jewel that everyone wants to see but can’t)

- creative ways that are specific to your industry and innovative, if you’re not sure hire a marketing freelancer or an expert for a few days to help. Some examples I like and to show us that it can be done and it’s not rocket science:
When Russ (rapper and singer @russ) was marketing for his tour, he was reposting fan’s content that involved his song, and he noticed how some love the tour and wanna join but can’t afford it, so he started giving away tickets randomly. Not only was it amazing for the people who got the free tickets, as a fan I felt that my paid ticket contribution is fun for me but also helpful for someone who can’t afford the ticket get to attend and enjoy as well (Sadly even though I bought tickets, russ’s concert got canceled in Dubai due to the pandemic, but you get my point)
Ibnhattuta (content creator @ibnhattuta) when he featured a new turkish airline on his account, and he had a giveaway for free return travel tickets with a staycation.
Also a big one, stop sending free tickets to influencers instead of actual fans! it’s infuriating when a fan who’s been watching for years can’t afford to attend but a free ticket is given to an influencer whom never shown interest or watched this event/sport exc… Some events like F1 have higher prices than concert tickets depending on the country they are being hosted in and fans do have to save for a long time, especially young ones.
I remember an influencer featuring a hotel on her stories to market it. I mean offer some fans a staycation there and film with them, a lot of people are onboard to do that. This way you market the hotel, involve your fans and this way other fans watching would actually consider to go, and get interesting content instead of the whole music and waves going on right now to the point I no longer know which influencer video I’m watching or which hotel or area is being marketed. (rings any bells?)

Would love to know what you think about this one in the comments, do you care about those things or does it only matter that you like the artist? Also, would you like more posts like this? Your reply can be a part two post discussion, let’s make this more interactive as well.
