Welcome back to weekend coffee chats, the Business Breakdown series, where we discuss different industries, businesses, and what we can learn from them. It’s been a while, so let’s start off with some light random thoughts I’ve had lately about the streaming conflicts going on.
Netflix ads on Youtube have been driving me crazy. The reason behind that is I already have a Netflix account and I’d assume that the same tracking cookie following me around because of a shoes I liked somewhere else would know that have a Netflix account. So my assumption is that either Netflix is trying to penetrate the market (as in increase their market share vs their competitors) by showing you all the stuff they have that HULU and Disney doesn’t, or (and this would be quite smart if it’s intentional) they’re using the ads as a reminder or awareness method to pull existing users back to their platform. It’s no secret that youtube is an indirect competitor to Netflix since they’re not a streaming service but they both compete for the same things, your attention and time to watch their content hence indirect. Or it could be both actually which honestly would be a refreshing use to normal overused youtube ads. What’s interesting as well is that youtube has a weakness Netflix doesn’t. See, Netflix can advertise on youtube and remind you to continue watching that series, but youtube cannot do that as Netflix has no ads, so i’m looking forward to see how youtube would respond to this. Because if they don’t then youtube may end up facing some real decline risks in the future at least, but that’s a rant for another day. Genius or wasted marketing dollars? You decide in the comments!
Not that I’m rooting for netflix or anything but I guess it’s been the latest thing I’ve checked so here’s another interesting netflix find, have u seen that “not sure what to watch click this” thing/button? You know regardless whether it actually works or not, I was happy to see that as it felt like they actually asked people that watch netflix what they’re struggling with or seen the endless jokes everyone shares online. Who knew memes would end u saving the day?
On the flip sides this week or last week, is it just me or youtube recommendations have gone insane? Now it’s very likely that i’m the issue, the way I search youtube sometimes ends up confusing even myself, but then I get recommended stuff i dont want to watch and when i refresh my homepage they are just shown again … like youtube why?
It makes me wonder, why doesnโt YouTube offer you a form to check what you want to watch that day ? The algorithm must be following some guidelines and it would be helpful if we could adjust those based on what kind of day or mood weโre in as that affects our interest in what to watch.
More rants coming your way, but that’s it for now, till next time ๐ !
