Advice Part#2 or Rather Online Knowledge Sources

Welcome back to weekend coffee chats, the Young Professional series.

Thank you to everyone reading these posts every weekend, we’ve had a hiccup last week, but now back to our regular (new time) programming, Saturday’s 9 PM moving forward (UTC/GMT +4 hours ) !

In last week’s post, we discussed the first part were we focused on advice received directly from people. For this week’s post we’ll be diving through the other forms such as books, podcasts, blogs, and even Twitter.

Now I’ve thought hard and long about actually sharing the below or not, as what works for one person could be completely useless to another. Also, humans are quite complex and their views and opinions change or vary from one topic to another. (Also, people get cancelled in the future so who knows …) Therefore, with that in mind, take from the below what benefits you, and ignore what’s not your cup of tea. Also, I don’t agree with everything the mentioned people below believe or share, I did however learn from some of their work and therefore recommend it. Lastly, nothing is sponsored as usual it’s just the journey of someone learning along the way.

So since getting personal advice is actually hard, especially early on in your career, below are some of the ways I’ve used prior to that and continue to use.

Books:

  • Tribe of mentors by Tim Ferris —> helpful for both personal and professional advice as it has entries from people of various industries and their view points on success, failure, and helpful tools.
  • The Four by Professor Scott Galloway —> last 2 chapters specifically —> the whole book is an interesting case study on the current giants running our consumer lives, but the gem in my opinion is the last 2 chapters aimed directly to young professionals with advice and tips.
  • Honorable mentions that I’m still currently reading: 12 Rules of Life by Dr. Jordan Peterson and Surrounded by Psychopaths by Thomas Erikson.

Podcasts:

  • Tim Ferris show —> just search by either a topic you’re interested in or a guest and give it a listen, there’s something usually for most people, and sometimes even guests you’ve never heard of before can share a similar situation that you’re going through and offer helpful insight. My personal favorite is the one with Brandon Stanton, the creator of the “Humans of New York”
  • The ground up show by Matt D’avella —> not sure if Matt still posts new episodes but old ones are still out there that you can check. They have guests that you may not find on other podcasts and it offers insightful conversations.
  • Tuesday morning coffee by Tyler Babin —> if you are interested in guests from the creative industry whom are the stars behind the curtain this is the podcast you need. (waiting for new episodes patiently though as there haven’t been ones in a while …. sad emojiesss ….)
  • The prof g show by Profession Scott Galloway —> Expert breakdown of the business world

Blogs:

  • think-boundless by Paul Millierd —> interested how life outside of corporate and on your own looks like? can it even be a successful adventure? Paul’s blog is the answer to that
  • Seth’s Blog by Seth Godin —> Short but deep daily nuggets of wisdom from the marketing legend
  • No Mercy No Malice by Professor Scott Galloway —> Business must read newsletter/blog insightful and importantly funny to get you through the mess we call our worlds and businesses these days

Twitter:

  • Associate Professor Zynep Tufekci at “zeynep” —> Technology meets ethics and great writing. Need I say more? Honesty Zynep Tufekci’s posts are one of the few reasons I check twitter anymore
  • Adam Singer at “AdamSinger”—> thought provoking content and views, “tech/life science investor, non-profit artist, marketing executive” also his dog dash the dingo can brighten the worst of your excel days

That is a wrap, for this edition at least.

Let me know in the comments what are your favorite sources of knowledge that we should check out? Also, is there a timing you prefer this blog being shared at? Would love to hear from you.

Living vs. Working next, so make sure to tune in next week.

Till Next Time !
